A community pre-processing centre, established by the Kerala Region of SEAI has poised for operation at Ambalapuzha in Alappuzha District of Kerala. The facility of the pre-processing centre was inaugurated by Ms. Leena Nair,IAS Chairman MPEDA in a function organized at Ambalapuzha on 29th November 2010.
The pre-processing plant is expected to eliminate unhygienic peeling practices now widely prevalent and also to upgrade the hygienic standards and sanitary conditions so as to bring them at par with international norms. Fisheries sector has a very vital role in the economy of the country and especially to Kerala which occupies the second slot in the total fish production of the country. The annual fish production of the State is 5,75,500 tonnes.
The pre-processing plant consisting of 10 pre-processing units is capable of accommodating about 500 workers at a time. The facility include two tube ice machine of 10 ton capacity each, two generator sets and two chill rooms – one for storing raw material and other for storing finished products. Apart from these, a full fledged laboratory is provided to test the raw material for microbiological parameters. Four bore wells and a water treatment plant for supply of potable water for all the units and an effluent treatment plant with sufficient capacity to treat the effluent before disposing to sea are also available at the centre.
This project is first of its kind in India and the area identified due to the availability of skilled workers and proximity to raw material sources. On account of the significance of the area in fish processing, the establishment of a Community Pre-processing Centre was thought of in the region. SEAI contributed sufficient land and manpower support while infrastructure, machinery and other facilities were provided by the Government of India through MPEDA as subsidy or grant-in-Aid from ASIDE fund for this novel project.
Ms. Leena Nair handed over the keys of the pre-processing centres to the stake holders in the function. Shri.Anwar Hashim, National President , SEAI welcomed the gathering. In his welcome speech he explained the reason for establishing the facility in the area and other details of the project. Shri . K.G. Lawrence in his presidential address mentioned that the timely support given by Chairman, MPEDA was crucial in executing the project. Shri. Elias Sait, Secretary General, SEAI in his felicitation address mentioned that Kerala was always in the forefront of setting up of infrastructure facilities for the Seafood industry.
