How many NBA Players are there all time: When Complex Sports started this list, we didn’t debate whether LeBron should be higher than MJ. We didn’t argue why Tim Duncan ought to be in the top 10 over Kevin Garnett and Kevin Durant (for now).
Almost until deadline, we debated whether Shaquille O’Neal, one of the best NBA big men and a true disruptor, deserved to be ranked higher than Kobe Bryant. O’Neal was athletic and statistically unique for an NBA centre. Do you give Bryant more credit for winning more rings and being compared to Michael Jordan?

Michael Jordan
Do you need more explanation? Michael Jordan is 1. After winning three straight, he left to play baseball, came back, won three straight again, and was one of the oldest players to average 20 PPG and score 40+ in a game. Definitely the GOAT.
Please note that he never played in a Finals Game 7 in six appearances, won a Defensive Player of the Year award (‘88), five MVPs, six Finals MVPs, and was named to the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke the NBA scoring record with 38,387 points and invented the most deadly shot. Basketball Finals MVP awards 14 years apart are rare. Abdul-Jabbar did. He won six MVPs (one more than Russell and Jordan) and is the only player in league history to win when his team missed the playoffs. He made NBA 75, naturally.
With the Bucks and Lakers, Abdul-Jabbar won three MVPs and five of his six rings. We’ll spare you from listing his 19 All-Star and 15 MVP voting top-5 finishes because you’d be scrolling this fine piece of content for hours.

Magic Johnson
Magic Johnson is the best NBA PG ever. His No. 4 ranking is justified. Magic’s 1979 NBA debut from Michigan State changed basketball. Consider that Magic started Game 6 of the NBA Finals at centre in his first season and scored 42 points.
The Lakers won their first title in nearly a decade with him playing all five positions. At his size, Magic changed how the basketball world saw guards. His achievements in 2020 seem unreal. Magic had one of the best careers in NBA history with five championships, three MVPs, nine All-NBA first team selections, and being named to the 75th anniversary team.
Kobe Bryant
First off, this isn’t a Kobe Bryant death reaction. Leaving Kobe Bean Bryant out of any top five list is disrespectful. After Kobe retired, Magic and Shaq named him the greatest Laker. Shouldn’t that tell you? The way Kobe affected the game and basketball culture shouldn’t be measured.
It includes NBA MVP, 5-time champion, two-time Finals MVP, 18-time All-Star, nine All-Defensive First Team selections, fourth-leading scorer, etc. Did you really watch Kobe Bryant, a member of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team, for 20 years and think, “He’s not that efficient, so he’s not as great as he’s claimed?”
