George Clooney Remembers Matthew Perry: Even Friends Stardom Didn’t Bring Him Joy

Matthew Perry’s dying days have been much discussed since his sad autopsy results.His drugs aren’t the only issue. According to acquaintances, he was in poor health.Perry was a teenager when George Clooney met her.He reveals that Perry was miserable even in his most successful years.Deadline interviewed George Clooney Tuesday. He knows Matthew Perry wanted a sitcom star role.

That dream materialized. Friends made Perry Chandler Bing.Clooney says Perry was a drug and alcohol addict. So even his prosperity was a burden.Clooney remembered, “He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind, and Grant Heslov.Perry would say, “I just want to get on a sitcom, man.”

Clooney quoted Perry as saying, “‘I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth.’”“And he got on probably one of the best ever,” Clooney said. Not the best sitcom, but one of the most renowned and iconic.“He wasn’t happy,” he said. “It didn’t bring him joy or peace.”

Clooney worked with Perry for years without knowing “what was going through him.”Many of us think of Clooney as “always” around. Our mothers liked us as guys. But he’s a real guy with career ups and downs. Mostly ups.Clooney was an ER regular in the 1990s while Perry was on Friends. Both shows captured the essence of adulthood in the 1990s.

“We just knew that he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was doing what, 12 Vicodin a day,” Clooney said. “And all that heartbreaking stuff he talked about.”
“And it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness,” Clooney said.“You have to be happy with yourself and your life,” he said correctly.

Money does fix many, probably most, life’s problems instantly. It simplifies other things. Even true wealth can only insulate you from the impact of your hardships in some cases.“I knew Matt when he was 16,” Clooney said.“We played paddle tennis together,” he said. “He’s 10 years younger than me.”Clooney remembered: “He was a great, funny, funny, funny kid.”

Late October saw Perry die at 54. He died in his Hollywood house pool.Perry had various drugs at home and in his system. Doctors believe he was taking recreational ketamine and buprenorphine, which helps with opioid addiction.Unfortunately, he consumed fatal amounts of both. Our hearts go out to his love.
