Christmas Carol History

  • The majority of the Christmas songs that come from roving carolers are less than two hundred years old. It was hymns, not carols, that were the world’s earliest Christmas songs.
  • People danced around stone circles and chanted pre-Christian or pagan songs to commemorate the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, usually December 22.
  • These songs evolved into Christian carols celebrating Jesus’ birth.
  • More Christmas music was written and created in the fourth century, but it wasn’t used in religious services until the 12th century. A young priest named Joseph Mohr wrote ‘Silent Night,’ a famous Christmas carol, as a poem in 1816.

The “Caroling” Tradition

  • Local leaders formed ‘Waits’ bands on Christmas Eve to continue the Christmas carol progression. They were named from singing on Christmas Eve, known as ‘watchnight’ or ‘wait night,’ comparable to the Christian belief that angels appeared to shepherds watching their sheep to announce Jesus’ birth.
  • These early “carolers” were known for their performances in public places during the 19th century. After some time, they began singing and acting door-to-door, which was a form of caroling.
