Step 3.

  • Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form in a clean dish. Slowly add remaining sugar and whip to firm peaks. Fold one-fourth of the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture until just mixed, then the rest.

Step 4.

  • Sift one-third combined dry ingredients over egg mixture. Gently fold until just incorporated, then add remaining flour. Put batter in pan gradually.

Step 5.

  • Bake 11–13 minutes until golden brown. Loosen pan edges with a tiny spatula or knife; cool 2 minutes. Invert onto wire rack to finish cooling.

Step 6.

  • Cut 16 cake tree forms. Put 2 tablespoons of buttercream on half the trees, then add the rest. Put on a rimmed baking sheet with a wire rack.

Step 7.

  • Melt wafers. Evenly coat cakes with melted candy. Sprinkles and chill till coating sets.

Step 8.

  • Add icing decorations. Wait 1 hour at room temperature, then store in an airtight container for 5 days.
