1.When and where can you see the Ursids meteor shower

  • The night sky shows Ursids. Nighttime and pre-dawn are excellent for meteor showers.
  • NASA recommends watching meteor showers away from streetlights.
  • Astronomers should lie on their backs with their feet facing south and look skyward. Your eyes need 30 minutes to acclimate to the dark to view meteors.
  • Ursid watchers should bundle up and stay warm.

2.What is a meteor shower

  • NASA defines meteors as space rocks that penetrate Earth’s atmosphere. As they fall toward Earth, they heat up and become shooting stars. Hot air from meteorites speeds through Earth’s atmosphere, creating light streaks.
  • Even though meteors appear every night, there are multiple meteor showers each year.
  • Many meteors hit Earth’s atmosphere quickly during meteor showers. Space burns up most meteors. A few meteorites survive Earth’s atmosphere and land on Earth. NASA advised meteor shower watchers not to look for meteorites.
  • In a NASA blog post, Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center’s Meteoroid Environment Office, said most meteors are colorless or white.
  • The Quadrantids, the next meteor shower, peak in early January. Quadrantids operate Dec. 26, 2023, to Jan. 16, 2024. After the Ursids and Quadrantids, another meteor shower won’t occur for months.
