  • An decoration in the shape of a pickle is always the last one to be put on the tree. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle buried in the pine needles gets to open the first present, or for some, gets a special treat.

How did the tradition of giving pickles at Christmas start?

  • That old Christmas pickle thing is thought to be a German thing by most people. Its name alone should be enough to tell you what it is, right? Well, The New York Times says that most Germans have never heard of the Weihnachtsgurke.
  • A poll in Germany found that 91% of people had never heard of it. Huh.
  • So, does the Christmas Pickle come from Germany? It looks like no one really knows.
  • People in the Midwest, especially Michigan, where there are a lot of German immigrants, like this custom the most.
  • Berrien Springs, Michigan was even called the “Christmas Pickle Capital of the World,” and every year there were pickle events. Is that how it became known as a German export? No one knows for sure.

Why is the Christmas Pickle important?

  • Not only is it hard to pinpoint where it comes from, but people also disagree on what it means. But there are a few stories about how the Christmas pickle came to be.

Legend #1: The Prisoner of the Civil War

  • One story says it was based on the story of a German-American soldier who was captured during the Civil War. He begged a guard for one last pickle before he died because he was so hungry. His mind and body were both strengthened by the sorrow pickle.

Legend No. 2: The Bad Innkeeper

  • Another well-known story is about two Spanish boys who were on their way home from boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn on their way, they were locked up in a pickle barrel by a mean landlord. That night, St. Nicholas went back to the same inn, found the boys, and set them free.

Third legend is about German glassblowers and a business plan

  • There’s also the most likely (but least romantic) story, which is about German glassblowers and a marketing plan. In the 1840s, German glassblowers were making decorations that looked like nuts, fruits, and maybe even pickles.
  • By the 1880s, the F. W. Woolworth Company was bringing them in from Germany and telling people about their history.
  • But you can cut, crunch, or stack the Christmas Pickle any way you like. It’s not going anywhere soon. Who knows where it came from? We’re more interested in where it is now and being the first to find it.
